Why Your Customers Think You're Speaking Klingon

I was reviewing a client's website copy last week when I came across this gem:

"We leverage synergistic methodologies to optimise your operational efficiency through integrated solutions that maximise ROI while ensuring scalable growth trajectories."

I had to read it three times just to figure out that they help businesses run better.

Every industry has its own secret language

This was not some corporate giant with a team of MBA buzzword enthusiasts. This was a smart, successful consultant who genuinely helps his clients solve real problems. But somewhere between his brain and his marketing, everything got lost in translation.

Here is the thing. Every industry has its own secret language. And everyone who works in that industry becomes so fluent in the jargon that they forget it sounds like complete gibberish to everyone else.

Lawyers talk about "actionable claims" and "due diligence" like everyone knows what that means. (Spoiler: they do not.)

Marketing agencies throw around "attribution modelling" and "conversion optimisation" as if these are everyday dinner table conversations. (They are not.)

Even plumbers have their own code, talking about "P-traps" and "backflow prevention" when most people just want to know why their toilet will not stop making that weird noise.

The problem is when the code leaks into your marketing

The problem is not that this language exists. Every profession needs precise terminology to communicate with colleagues.

The problem is when this insider language leaks into marketing that is supposed to connect with people who do not speak the code. It is like trying to order food at a restaurant where the menu is written entirely in technical culinary terms.

And then businesses wonder why their marketing does not resonate. Why people seem confused about what they actually do. Why prospects do not engage with their content. It is because they are essentially speaking Klingon to people who only understand English.

Comedy forces you to speak human

Here is what is interesting. The businesses that break through this jargon barrier do not just get better marketing results. They become the go-to experts in their field.

Why? Because they are the ones who can take complex concepts and make them understandable. And in a world full of confusing technical speak, being the person who gets it and can explain it simply is incredibly valuable.

This is where comedy becomes your secret weapon. Humour forces you to be relatable. You cannot make a joke about "synergistic methodologies" because nobody knows what that means. But you can make a joke about the chaos of trying to manage a business with seventeen different spreadsheets and a prayer.

When you use humour to describe what you do, you automatically translate the jargon into human language. You stop talking about "solutions" and start talking about problems people actually recognise.

But here is where most business owners get stuck. They know they need to simplify their message, but they do not know how to do it without sounding unprofessional or oversimplified. How do you explain complex services in simple terms? How do you stay relatable without losing credibility?
