The Accidental Discovery That Became a Marketing Superpower

Can entertaining people, with no obvious sell, actually be good marketing?

Yes, and I learned it by accident. Early in my TV career I pitched a three-minute segment that was mostly a presenter reading out a list of silly quiz-show puns. It was a hit. The lesson took me years to name: pure entertainment earns attention, and attention is exactly what all marketing is really competing for.

The segment that made no sense

Two weeks into my job at The One Show, Britain's most watched chat show, we had a guest from Call the Midwife. I decided the perfect way to make their segment entertaining was a midwifery-themed quiz show.

So there I was, days into my dream job, pitching a list of pun-laden quiz titles to Gareth, the executive producer. His reaction, before I had even reached the questions: "That's it. That's the item." We ran three minutes: one minute forty-five of a presenter reading my ridiculous list of names, and one minute fifteen of actual quiz to justify the first bit.

Why it worked

It was absurd, and audiences loved it. There was no lesson, no product, no clever hook. Just entertainment, and it held the attention of millions of viewers on primetime television.

At the time I thought I was simply being funny for the sake of it. I did not realise I was using a tool that would later become the whole basis of a marketing company.

The superpower I did not know I had

Comedy is not just fun. It grabs attention, sticks in the memory, and gets people talking. Those three effects are precisely what a piece of marketing needs and usually fails to achieve.

Blend humour with a relatable truth about your market and something shifts. You stop merely entertaining people and start building desire for what you sell. It does not just entertain. It converts.

Why it matters for your marketing

The same force that made a silly list of puns worth watching is what makes an ad worth watching, an email worth opening, and a post worth sharing. Attention is scarce, and entertainment is one of the few reliable ways to win it and hold it.

Get that right and your marketing stops being something people tolerate and becomes something they actively enjoy, which is when it finally starts working.
