Henry Ford Was Wrong About the Faster Horse

Founder and Head of Growth, White Label Comedy
Should you ignore what customers say they want and trust your own vision instead?
Usually not. The famous Henry Ford line, that customers would only have asked for a faster horse, gets quoted to justify guessing. But betting on your own interpretation is risky. Most of the time, listening to customers and solving the problems they actually name is the surer, faster and cheaper route to more sales.
The quote everyone gets wrong
"If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse." It is a great line, and it is used to celebrate ignoring customers in favour of a visionary leap.
Sometimes that pays off. But it is a big bet, because you are gambling that your interpretation of what people want is correct. And let us be honest: a faster horse would have been exactly right for anyone who wanted to win a horse race.
The small wins hiding in your inbox
Most of the time, the smarter move is far less glamorous: just listen.
A reader called Edgard wrote in to say our emails were a little hard to read. So we bumped the font up two sizes. A tiny change, but now more people can comfortably read them, which means more people get value, which builds goodwill, which quietly leads to more sales over time. That is a real return for about thirty seconds of work.
The big wins too
Sometimes the feedback points at something much larger than a font size.
We built an entire training, Funny Is Money, because people kept asking the same thing: how do I use comedy in my sales letters, emails and ads? We did not guess that offer into existence. Our audience told us they wanted it, and we made it. Those little and large wins add up fast.
Why listening beats guessing
Here is the difference. Guessing is a gamble on your own taste. Listening is reading a map your customers have drawn for you.
The small improvements compound, and the big bets are de-risked, because someone has already told you they want the thing before you build it. Vision has its place, but for most businesses most of the time, the shortcut to growth is simply paying attention.
