The Ideal Hook for Reels (In Three Ingredients)

What makes a good hook for a Reel or short video?

Three ingredients in the first five seconds: a pattern interrupt that makes them go "wait, what?", a Relatable Truth they instantly recognise, and a hint at solving a problem they have right now. Combine all three with a little humour and you stop the scroll and earn the next five seconds. No dancing required.

The first five seconds decide everything

Here is how I built the hooks for our videos that pulled tens of thousands of views. Because let's be honest: what happens in the first five seconds will make or break your results. Everything after the hook is irrelevant if nobody stays to see it.

(And no, none of these involve dancing. You can thank me later.)

Ingredient one: a pattern interrupt

Something unexpected. A bold statement, a controversial opinion, a "wait, did they really just say that?" moment.

The feed is a river of sameness, and the brain filters out anything that looks like what it just scrolled past. A pattern interrupt is a small jolt that breaks the trance long enough for the viewer to actually look.

Ingredient two: a Relatable Truth

Hit them with something they have genuinely experienced, but phrased in a way nobody else has said before.

Recognition is what turns a passive scroller into an engaged viewer. The instant they think "that is so me", they are no longer watching your video, they are watching their own life, and that is far harder to scroll away from.

Ingredient three: a promise to solve a pain

Hint at the solution to a problem they are facing right now. Give them a reason to believe the next thirty seconds are worth it.

Put them together with a bit of humour

Map out those three, then combine them with a dash of comedy. For example:

"Everyone says 'just be authentic on social media.' Cool. My authentic self spent three hours organising my desk instead of posting today."

Or:

"If your content process involves staring at your phone until you hate everything you have ever posted, first, same. Second, watch this."

See how each one grabs attention and gets a laugh at the same time? That is the difference between a hook that stops the scroll and one of those "how to crush it on social" intros that crush your soul instead.

Meet Brian

Coming up with hooks like these used to take me hours, and my "rejected hooks" folder was getting embarrassingly large. That is exactly the grind Brian, our AI Comedy Marketing Machine, is built to remove.

Brian helps you generate scroll-stopping, genuinely funny hooks in minutes, using the same frameworks our writers use, so your first five seconds do their job every time.

Take Brian for a spin and never stare at a blank hook again.
