Your Marketing Has a Dopamine Problem

Founder and Head of Growth, White Label Comedy
Why does good marketing still get ignored on social media?
Because it is not competing with your competitors, it is competing with the dopamine feed: dogs on skateboards, satisfying food videos, and whatever a pop star did last night. The brands that break through do not do it with better offers or fancier sites. They do it by making the marketing itself more entertaining to watch than the scroll around it.
What your customer is actually doing
Your ideal customer is scrolling right now. But they are not reading your latest post about your "innovative solutions" or "world-class service".
They are watching a man pour milk into a bowl of cereal, in reverse, while dancing, to a sped-up version of that song from Titanic. And they will watch it four times before moving on.
The endless loop
Social media has rewired all of us. We are stuck in a dopamine loop: scroll, get a tiny hit of entertainment, scroll more, repeat until you forget what year it is.
That is a massive problem for businesses, because your careful, professional marketing message is not competing with the other firms in your industry. It is competing with dogs skateboarding, babies laughing at random objects, and whatever wild thing happened last night. And, honestly, your "comprehensive business solutions" are not winning that fight.
How some brands break through anyway
Here is what fascinates me. The businesses that do break through the dopamine barrier are not doing it with a better offer or a slicker website.
They are doing it by making their marketing genuinely entertaining to consume. They stop trying to interrupt the feed and start trying to earn a place in it.
Take Death Wish Coffee. They did not win by having better coffee (although it probably helps that theirs can wake the dead). They won by making their marketing more entertaining than doom-scrolling. The result was a 12,000% sales spike that literally broke their website.
Yes, this works in your industry too
Before you say "but my business is different", I have watched this work for funeral homes, tax advisors, manufacturing companies, and accountants who finally discovered there is more to humour than saying "it's accrual world" and winking.
The principle does not care how serious your industry is. If your marketing cannot compete with a man pouring cereal in reverse, the answer is not to shout louder. It is to become worth watching.
